Why it matters

The most expensive customisations are the ones nobody can maintain

Dynamics 365 rewards teams who customise through the platform and punishes teams who reach for code by reflex. Over-customised systems become brittle: every platform update is a risk, every form change waits on a partner, and the people who built the original logic have moved on. The skill that prevents this is knowing where configuration ends and custom code begins, and staying on the configuration side of that line wherever the platform allows. This course teaches exactly that, on a live environment, with practice exercises rather than slides.

A business rule a maker can read beats a plugin only the original developer understood. We teach customisation as the discipline of doing as much as possible the way the platform intends.

What it covers

Five areas of Dynamics 365 customisation

The curriculum runs from solution discipline through to the current Power Platform methods. Each area is hands-on against a live environment.

Solutions and environments

Work the way customisation is actually shipped: in managed solutions across environments, not direct edits in production.

  • Managed vs unmanaged solutions and when each applies
  • Publisher and solution layering
  • Moving customisations between development, test and production
  • Why direct production edits are the habit to unlearn first

Forms, views and the app surface

Shape what users see and do, from main forms and quick-create to model-driven app navigation.

  • Main, quick-view and quick-create form design
  • Views, charts and dashboards
  • Model-driven app composition and site map
  • Form events and the modern client

Data model and business logic

Customise the Dataverse table model and enforce rules without writing plugins where the platform can do it.

  • Tables, columns, relationships and keys
  • Business rules and rollup and calculated columns
  • Business process flows
  • When low-code is enough and when code is warranted

Security and access

Configure who can see and do what, the part of customisation that audit cares about most.

  • Security roles, business units and teams
  • Record-level and field-level security
  • Hierarchy security models
  • Mapping access design to your governance posture

Power Platform customisation methods

The current low-code methods that have replaced much of the legacy customisation code.

  • Power Apps component framework basics
  • Power Automate flows in place of classic workflows
  • Connectors and the Dataverse API surface
  • Application lifecycle management for citizen and pro makers

FAQs

Frequently asked questions: Dynamics 365 customisation training

What does Dynamics 365 customisation training cover?

It covers configuring and customising the Dynamics 365 customer engagement applications: solutions and environments, forms, views, dashboards and model-driven apps, the Dataverse data model, business rules and process flows, security roles and access, and the current Power Platform customisation methods that have replaced much of the legacy code. The course is based on the Microsoft 55242A curriculum, updated for current platform practice.

What is the difference between configuration and customisation?

Configuration uses the platform's built-in settings: security roles, views, business rules, process flows. Customisation extends the platform: custom tables and columns, custom forms, Power Apps component framework controls, and where needed, code. A well-run implementation does as much as possible through configuration and low-code before reaching for custom code, because configuration is easier to support, upgrade and audit. The training teaches where that line sits.

Do I need to know how to code to take this course?

No. The course focuses on configuration and low-code customisation, which is where most Dynamics 365 customisation now happens. It suits administrators, makers and functional consultants. It also gives developers the platform grounding they need before writing plugins or custom controls, but coding is not a prerequisite.

Is this the 55242A course?

Yes. The programme is built on the Microsoft 55242A Dynamics 365 Customization and Configuration curriculum, updated to reflect current Power Platform customisation methods rather than the older code-first approaches. We keep the recognised course structure while teaching the platform as it works today.

Can the training be tailored to our own Dynamics 365 environment?

Yes. We deliver tailored programmes mapped to the applications and modules your team runs, for groups of any size. Tailoring the exercises to your own configuration is the fastest way to make the skills stick, because learners practise on the system they will actually maintain.

How does customisation training relate to a Dynamics 365 implementation?

Customisation training builds the internal capability to maintain and evolve the system after go-live, so you are not dependent on a partner for every form change. It pairs naturally with an implementation: the partner delivers the build, the training equips your team to own it. See our Dynamics 365 implementation page for the delivery side.
