From updates to Feature Releases

That’s how Microsoft Dynamics 365 Product Team seems to see the way forward to updating (or releasing features) to Dynamics 365.

Earlier in July 2018, Mo Ozborne, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Business Applications Engineering wrote a blog post on Microsoft’s “cloud blogs” with the title: “Modernising the way we update Dynamics 365“.

Say goodbye to scheduling updates

In other words, you will no longer have to schedule updates from the Dynamics 365 Admin Centre. Instead you will have the upgrades as features which you can enable and disable for your instance (Beta releases, preview releases etc).

This is going to make things a lot easier for customers and partners as new features are rolled out to the system. I think it will also increase customers’ confidence in Microsoft technical skills in general.

These changes come at a crucial time in the life cycle of Dynamics 365 family of products.

Previously, customers and partners struggled with upgrading Dynamics 365 from earlier versions to new versions. Many customers reported bugs, lack of customisation compatibility and general frustration with Microsoft support as these upgrade issues were being resolved. This is all about to change as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Product Development team plan to force updates on all clients without the need to schedule them.

Reading the release notes becomes important

What’s important to note when these changes do come is the fact that the Dynamics 365 release notes will need to be carefully read by all system administrators (or partners for some customers).

Time to upgrade from V8.2 for everyone

If you  organisation is running on an older version of Dynamics 365 right now (say version 8.0 or 8.2), get ready to be forced onto the next version (Version 9.0) before January 2019. This can be a good, or a bad thing for you, depending on how much custommisations you have on the instance. My best tip for you is backup your instance BEFORE you attempt the update (you don’t want to experience failures after the upgrade, because some customers reported major failures).
